I think one of my favorite things to eat are caramelized onions. They are soft, and after they cook for a while they become sweet and juicy! I decided to take these caramelized onions and make them into a caramelized onion chicken dumplings recipe because you guys love my dumpling recipes.

These dumplings have the extra level flavor because of the caramelized onions. I also like serving these dumplings in a bowl of French onion soup. They pair so well together.
Caramelizing onions take a little while and patience to make, but they are definitely worth it. You have to use the lowest heat possible or else the onions will burn pretty quickly. I added about four onions to a pot and those cooked down within 40 minutes.

Making your own dumpling wrappers
Making your own dumpling wrappers makes any dumpling extra special because the dough is softer and chewier than store brought dough. However this part can be time-consuming so there is no shame in using the store bought ones!
The only ingredients you need for the dumpling wrappers are flour and water! It’s super easy to combine the ingredients, however the hard part comes while rolling the dough out. There are two ways that you can do this. The first one is to cut the dough into small pieces and roll them out individually. The second way is to roll out the dough flat into a rectangle and use a cookie cutter to cut out the dumpling wrapper shape.

Key ingredients for these caramelized onion chicken dumplings:
- Flour
- I used all purpose flour to make these dumpling wrappers!
- Onion
- This is an obvious ingredient for this recipe it adds so much flavor and depth to these dumplings.
- Chicken
- I used ground chicken for this recipe but you can also use ground pork or ground Turkey.
- Chicken broth
- I used this for both the caramelized onion and also for the French onion soup.
- Green onion
- I know there’s already onion in the filling, however I can never make any dumpling without green onions.
- Soy sauce
- A lot of the flavor comes from soy sauce! I love the umami and salty flavor it brings.
- White pepper
- I LOVE WHITE PEPPER. It is by far my favorite seasoning to flavor any of my Asian dishes.
- Sesame oil and olive oil
- I added two types of oil here: olive oil and sesame oil. I added olive oil because a large amount of sesame oil will over power the flavor! This keeps the filling nice and juicy.

- 250 g all purpose flour about 2 cups
- 140 ml warm water
Soup (for 2)
- ½ cup caramelized onions
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
Instructions
- First start by slicing up your onions thinly. Turn the heat to low, then in a large pot add the olive oil followed by the onions. When it's been approximately 20 minutes add the salt and chicken stock. These caramelized onions should take around 40 minutes to become soft. Once they are done let them chill completely in the fridge.
- Now make the dough by combining the water and the flour in a large mixing bowl. Knead together with your hands until a smooth dough ball forms. Let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- Take the dough and knead it again with your hands, then split the dough in half. There are two ways to make the dumpling wrapper. The first way is to roll out the dough into a long log shape and cut it into one inch pieces. Then roll each piece out with a rolling pin. The second way is to roll out the dough into a large, thin rectangular shape and use a cookie cutter to cut out the wrapper shapes.
- Take one dumpling wrapper and place some of the filling in the center of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper around the dumpling in a circular motion making sure that everything is sealed.
- In a frying pan add in 1 tbsp of olive oil then place the dumplings onto the oil. Add ¼ cup water into the frying pan then cover with a lid. Steam for about 8 minutes.
- In the meantime make the soup by heating up some chicken stock. Then add in the caramelized onion and soy sauce.
- To serve place the dumplings in a serving bowl and pour the soup on top.
